LEarn about Rob Boek's Journey at BSC
Congratulations to our April 2026 Athlete of the Month, Rob Boek!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
When I first joined Beaverton CrossFit in the summer of 2012, I was in close to the worst shape I had ever been in. I was athletic in high school, playing football, wrestling, and running track, but after that my fitness steadily declined. I tried going to the gym and running, but never really enjoyed it and couldn’t stay consistent.
CrossFit changed that for me. The structure, coaching, and community made it something I actually wanted to show up for. I was fortunate to be named Athlete of the Month in 2013, and now, more than a decade later, fitness is still a big part of my life. I’m still setting goals, still hitting PRs, and continuing to improve year after year.
What were your goals when you started, and have you achieved any of them?
When I started, my goals were simple: get back in shape and get stronger. Because of my sports background I had decent strength—I could back squat around 300 pounds—so I set long-term goals: a 500 lb deadlift, 400 lb squat, 300 lb bench press, and a 200 lb overhead press.
Over the years I’ve been able to reach several of those, including a 505 lb deadlift and a 435 lb squat. I’ve come close on the others with a 290 lb bench and a 195 lb overhead press.
This year I set a different type of goal: finishing the CrossFit Open in the top 10% of my age group. I ended up in the 92nd percentile, and I’m looking forward to Quarterfinals
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
I really believe in the CrossFit training methodology. It’s incredibly efficient—you can get a fantastic workout in about an hour that combines strength, conditioning, and skill work.
The coaching has been a huge part of it. All the coaches have been fantastic over the years, and I’ve learned something from each of them. Mike and Christine have done an amazing job building the gym and creating a great environment.
But the biggest reason is the community. The athletes at BSC are some of the best people you’ll meet. It’s a positive, encouraging atmosphere where everyone pushes each other to improve.
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
My “aha!” moment was finally realizing how much nutrition mattered. The coaches had talked about it for years, but I didn’t put it into practice until July 2025, when I started tracking what I was eating. I was amazed by how many extra calories and how much junk food had been in my diet. Once I paired better nutrition with consistent training, everything started to click. I ended up losing about 40 pounds and getting down to around 13% body fat. At 47, I’m in the best shape of my life.
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
It’s hard to limit it to just a few names because there are inspiring people everywhere you look at BSC. But I’d have to give a shout-out to my regular afternoon crew: Damascus, Doug, Rylee, Ryan, Mike, Natalie, Kirstin, and Nick.
Training with them regularly keeps me motivated. Everyone works hard, supports each other, and brings a great attitude to the gym, which makes it easier to show up and give your best effort.
