LEarn about Ray Williams's Journey at BSC
Congratulations to our May 2025 Athlete of the Month, Ray Williams!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
I started doing Crossfit in 2014 (in Seattle) and have not looked back. I remember my first day and I was lying on the floor (in the bathroom of West Seattle Crossfit) so nauseous after just the warmup, which I thought was the workout. Something about the coaches, community and challenge just made me feel that I am going to come back. I did.
We relocated to Portland in late 2022 and at that time I joined Beaverton CrossFit. It just felt like a natural place to continue my journey; It is absolutely the right place!
What were your goals when you started, and have you achieved any of them?
At first, I just wanted to lose weight, but over time, my goals matured and revolved around being physically and mentally healthy. In 2019, a fundamental shift occurred, I entered rehab (for my alcoholism) and have been sober ever since. After a few years of sobriety, I realized (just like alcohol), my relationship with food was ruthlessly chipping away at my overall wellbeing and in 2023, I changed my relationship with food. Now, the journey continues as my mind and body is looking for balance.
Today, I am at the healthiest (mentally and physically) I have ever been. I am focused on testing that resolve by participating in events like Hyrox and Spartan and getting back to not only officiating youth soccer games but participating in adult rec leagues.
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
Exercise is part of my overall self, and I do not see a future without CrossFit. The community and coaches at BSC are welcoming, challenging and fun and keep me coming back
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
My ‘ah ha’ moment came after I changed my nutritional habits. As my body (and mind) responded, I lost absolute strength and it concerned me. I always felt a since of accomplishment by being one of the strongest ‘athletes’ at the boxes I attended. Losing that hurt my ego. Then came the ‘ah ha”… I was able to do pull-ups, climb a rope, run much faster and I even did my very first muscle-up. And when I did the math, I am pound-for-pound stronger then before. Looking at myself now, I am more rounded and physically capable
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
I am the first to admit that I am generally quiet and content just coming in ‘working’ and going about my day. With that said, I do feel a strong connection to the new athletes that are beginning the BCF journey. To the OG athletes that we all secretly (or not so secretly) try to beat during a WOD. And to and all the other athletes, I have had the pleasure to connect with from the early morning, afternoon and weekend classes. Everyone has a story and a gift, you just must be present and willing to listen and learn. My journey has taught me not to judge, but understand and support.
