LEarn about Hannah Yoshinaga's Journey at BSC
Congratulations to our May 2026 Athlete of the Month, Hannah Yoshinaga!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
Historically, I played field hockey through high school, college and a bit after. A college coach got me into running which I got deep into in my early 20's and through grad school. After lots of miles, some overuse injuries, I joined a crossfit gym, after barely lifting outside of standard gym workouts. It brought me some friends that I still have today, which kept me coming back and joining different gyms. Crossfit also introduced me to strong women, and challenged standards that I think are put forward about what women should look like.
What were your goals when you started, and have you achieved any of them?
At this stage, I am really just making sure that I am keeping active. I enjoy being challenged and generally enjoy working out for the most part. Working out for me has always been a mental release- just with some physical benefits. I generally am a nicer person when I am working out.
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
I feel like I am a pretty self motivated person; at this point in my life, it's been a challenge to listen to what my body needs and any guilt that I may feel, which honestly has been really healthy for me. Going to the gym at this season of my life really just been about being around other people, and challenging myself in ways I may not do on my own. I am a pretty quiet person day to day, so sometimes just being around people is good.
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
I think I often have to remind myself that rest is good, less rather than more can be good, any movement is better than none and sometimes adapting workouts/movements to what you need, whether that's doing something that challenges you more or is a scale down is a good reminder that we all need.
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
I think everyone who comes in and takes time out of their day to do something for themself. - I think gyms in general are intimidating places, especially a crossfit gym, so walking in whether you come in after working all day, have other things going on in your life, are starting over- whatever it may be can be an inspiration. On a side note, My husband Kelly really wants me to write him down, but really I just drag him along on the weekend to make sure he works out, and so that he is reminded who the boss really is.
