From Golf Rounds to Pull-up Rounds
LEarn about Bob Miller's Journey at BSC
Congratulations to our September 2025 Athlete of the Month, Bob Miller!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
My son Bill jumped in to CrossFit and said I should give it a try. I’d always kept fit with backpacking, endurance sports and calisthenics but my activity dropped off considerably in my 60’s. 3-4 rounds of golf a week was great but wasn’t the answer. I was going skinny in the shoulders like an old man. The first CrossFit session showed I was very deconditioned.
From the start the movements and intensity were very challenging. I go 4-5 times a week. The coaches are incredible – clear, concise, and direct. Experienced athletes help me with technique – I had no history with Olympic lifts or gymnastic movements. I couldn’t do three consecutive pullups when I showed up in December 2023. This year I did the Murph, including the 100 pullups. Completing Open Workout 25.3 (Masters) under the cap made me feel I’ve recovered some of that energy and strength I'd felt I’d lost.
What were your goals when you started, and have you achieved any of them?
At 65 my goals were to increase functional fitness, agility, and balance. Today I have far fewer aches and pains than my pre-CrossFit days. Range of motion has improved across the board and I’m stronger. The biggest takeaway is I have a lot of fun getting along with the athletes and coaches and the intensity of the workouts lets me test my limits for strength and endurance. Coaches’ help with scaling to get the proper stimulus keeps me away from injury and moving toward better form and results
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
I love the quick check-in and the hour spent with friends doing hard stuff and the shared exhaustion/satisfaction of getting a great workout. I’ve been to 8 or 9 CrossFit gyms around the country. At “3-2-1-GO !” they’re all the same. But BSC is special to me – you guys changed my life. Early on I read Glassman’s Foundations essay about functional fitness. I read, “Learning to Breathe Fire” and decided the best way to respect the CrossFit ethos was to ramp up the intensity. I learned about fueling for strength from Dan John’s “Never Let Go.”
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
I was crushed when, 3 months in, I saw Open WOD 24.3 had sets of 10 thrusters and pullups. I still hadn’t done more than 2 consecutive pullups. Sasha and Rob Boek leaned in – “Do one at a time.” They kept pushing and I did 3 sets of 10, one pullup at a time. I learned to never say, “I can’t.” Rather, it’s “I don’t, yet.” Except for double unders. Pretty sure I can’t.
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
All of you. Retirement lets me attend different sessions throughout the day and I’ve met terrific people. Each coach has at some point given clear, concise, direct correction that helped me move forward on lifts and movements. And you can’t overstate the impact of Mike making a very quiet, concise correction while locking eyes about a foot and a half away from your face.
